WA Region – Information Workshop

MORNING SESSION – 9am to 12pm (coffee break 10.30am)
Introduction of Alpacas – Origin, Suri/Huacaya, breeding females and males, pets and herd guards. Alpacas as a livestock industry.
Basic husbandry – Shearing, injections, worming, trimming toenails and teeth, weight scoring, applying ear tags, general health and wellbeing.
Handling – Halter training, restraining animals safely for treatment, inspection or shearing, loading on trailers and transporting.
Feed and Nutrition, Fencing.
Bio security – Ear tags, (NLIS) waybills, quarantine.


AFTERNOON SESSION – 12.30pm to 2.30pm (approx.)
AAA – Why we have Alpaca Shows and the benefits of being a member.
Breeding – Mating decisions, what are we trying to achieve. A demonstration of spit offs and pregnancy scans. Basic birthing procedures and cria care.
Fleece – How to sort and pack at shearing time. Information on how to sell or value add to your fleece. Examples of different quality and types of fleeces. A demonstration of micron testing and how the information helps us with breeding decisions.

We will have both Huacaya and Suris for the presentation as well as several different colours.
