Please join us our SHEARING webinar where panellists Jonathan Provis-Vincent and John Harris will discuss the topline principles of shearing preparation, regularity, and different shearing techniques subject to the aims of the farmer/breeder. This will be interactive, with opportunities for Q+A.
INTRODUCING OUR PANELLISTS
JONATHAN PROVIS-VINCENT BIO + PHOTO
Jonathon Provis-Vincent has been shearing alpacas for just shy of 10 years and has shorn herds across Victoria, both small and large. Jonathon has been in the industry for 11 years now and began shearing to ease the pressure of finding a shearer. Jonathon initially started his alpaca journey with his mother, Sallyanne, in Ararat (Vic) for a number of years before joining forces with his partner Maddy Bissels and her parents – Martin and Michelle – in 2019, operating the herd from Yea, Victoria. Jonathon and Maddy’s herd consist of Huacaya with a focus on white along with fawn, grey and black.
JOHN HARRIS BIO + PHOTO
John Harris has been working with black Huacayas and Suris, in partnership with his wife Sue, for over 15 years and is based in the temperate rainforest of the Otway Ranges, in southern Victoria, which presents its own set of animal management challenges. John does some shearing himself, including when show fleece is removed before seed contamination, and to prepare their male alpacas for matings. John also shears some of the alpacas they sold in their region and assists those in the region who are concerned and bring their over-fleeced animals to them.
In recent years, the number of available shearers has declined, the demand has increased, and shearers are subject to significant pressure throughout the shearing season. Jonathan and John have identified the need to promote alpaca shearing to those who wish to shear their own alpacas or to shear professionally. They are passionate about shearing knowledge and expertise.
They see this initial online shearing webinar as a first step in many, to lift our shearing capacity nationally, and they hope it will emphasise key points for those who are keen to improve their knowledge and confidence. Equally, they look forward to the attendees sharing their own thoughts and shearing experiences.
You are invited to a Zoom webinar.
